What is this tour about?
This walk tells the story of Senta’s former Jewish community - not through statistics, but through locations, houses, and human lives.
A city walk that:
- is about remembrance
- highlights the role of the Jewish bourgeoisie in Senta’s development
- guides visitors sensitively and informatively
- helps understand what was lost, and what remains
What will you see?
1️⃣ Senta Synagogue & Great Synagogue Memorial
The tour begins in Senta’s city center:
- walking along Posta Street
- stop at the memorial on the site of the former Great Synagogue
- learn about the formation of the community and its religious and social role
Next, we visit the Senta Synagogue, where we explore:
- the building’s history
- everyday religious life
- the community at its peak and the tragic interruption of its existence
2️⃣ Jewish townhouses & city life
Walking through the city center and along Toparti Street, we pass houses that:
- once belonged to Jewish families
- belonged to merchants, doctors, and craftsmen
- shaped Senta’s economic and cultural identity
Here, the city’s bourgeois past comes alive, through stories, not just buildings.
3️⃣ Jewish Cemetery – a quiet place of remembrance
The tour concludes at the Jewish cemetery on Senta’s outskirts:
- 19th-century gravestones
- Hebrew and Hungarian inscriptions
- community leaders, families, personal stories
This site is not a closure, but a deepening: a quiet tribute to those who were part of the city for centuries.
