Why is this tour special?
Subotica is not only the capital of Art Nouveau, but also a stronghold of Balkan gastronomy.
This tour combines sightseeing with tasting local flavors: instead of eating in a separate restaurant, you enjoy a true street food experience while walking, exactly where the locals do.
The program is built around three iconic local foods:
- Burek – the emperor of Balkan bakeries
- Pljeskavica – a spicy, juicy, freshly grilled meat dish
- A local drink – choice of a local homemade drink, yogurt, or rakija (customized for the group)
This tour showcases the cultural and gastronomic essence of the city – a unique experience for those who want to understand the real face of Subotica.
What will you see? City sights + a culinary journey
Town Hall – The genius of Art Nouveau
- Brief historical overview
- Žolnai elements and decorative motifs
- Civic life in old Subotica
Raichle Palace – A world of colors, shapes, and flavors
- One of the city’s most unique buildings
- The fusion of art and gastronomy
Old Market Area
- Where the culture of burek and bakeries was born
- Faces, flavors, and aromas
Tastings along the way – the culinary part of the tour
Burek – freshly baked, crispy
At the beginning of the tour, we taste the iconic bakery dish: meat, cheese, or spinach burek. We’ll also discuss the differences between the Serbian, Bosnian, and Greek versions.
Pljeskavica – the heart of Balkan grilling
At a local grill, you’ll get pljeskavica served in fresh flatbread with classic toppings:
tomato, onion, ajvar, kajmak.
The guide will explain why this is considered the Serbian “hamburger.”
A local drink – choice of options
- Local drink specialty
- Yogurt – traditionally enjoyed with burek by locals
- Rakija – for participants 18+ only, small tasting (plum, quince, pear)
What will we talk about? Special gastronomic stories
- What is the real burek? (and what isn’t…)
- How pljeskavica is made and its seasoning secrets
- How the Austro-Hungarian Empire influenced local gastronomy
- What defines the “taste of Subotica”?
- Secrets of bakeries and grill spots
- Turkish and Hungarian influences in the local cuisine
- What locals eat on holidays and everyday meals
The gastronomy is built on history – and here, every bite tells another story about Subotica.
Who is this tour recommended for?
- Food tourists
- Families and friends
- Young people who love street food experiences
- Any Hungarian who adores Balkan flavors
- Even corporate teams (relaxed, fun program)
Why is this tour better than a “simple food tour”?
- Because you taste along the way – combined with authentic local experiences
- Because you try three iconic dishes, not just one
- Because the guide provides cultural and gastronomic background
- Because we don’t take you to touristy restaurants, but to places where locals eat
- Because the tour is simultaneously relaxed, informative, and entertaining
